Alison’s June Reads
I don’t know if I like an activity more than sitting in the sunshine with a good book. Beach side while the kids splash in the waves. On the front porch while the birds sing in the background. On a park bench with kids running all around. Any and everywhere I could possibly get a few pages in while soaking up the sunshine this month I read. What a wonderful way to spend a June!
Every Breath, Nicholas Sparks (3.5 stars). I fell in love with the love stories from Nicholas Sparks when I was a teenager and still to this day I love how he builds a good romance! Another love that came with his books was the love for the Outer Banks, North Carolina. He made the area seem so magical, and at the end of May, my family finally took my bucket list trip to Duck, North Carolina. In honor of my buddy, Nick, I had to read one of his books while on the trip. Every Breath didn’t take place in the Outer Banks, but rather a different coastal island of North Carolina. The read was good, but definitely not one of my favorites from him.
The Berry Pickers, Amanda Peters (4 stars). This was a dual perspective book that carried a brother in sister through their lifetimes after being separated as children. I found this book to be different, interesting, and captivating, although it could definitely be described as sorrow filled and depressing. I find family stories (on pages and in real life) to be so interesting and this book did a great job representing the culture, secrets, and emotions of the family.
The Love Haters by Katherine Center (5 stars). A cute rom-com that was perfect for summertime! This book kept me laughing for sure. While the co-worker’s lies kind of gave me the ick, the book was redeemed by the heavy body image theme. I could relate so much to Katie’s bathing suit phobia and all the struggles that go along with not feeling comfortable in your own skin. For me, this was a perfect summer read!
