Chelsey’s September Reads
Like most moms around the country, the month of September marked the beginning of nearly everything - kids sports and activities, Community Bible Study commitments, school; our family was not exempt from the ramp-up of obligations. I found myself with several evenings a week to myself while my husband was traveling for work, so I was actually able to read a decent amount even in the middle of the crazy!
Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q. Sutanto (3.5 stars) - A slightly twisty-turvy tale of a lonely woman who sets out to solve a murder. It had funny moments, and kept me guessing for a while!
Sounds Like Love by Ashley Poston (4.5 stars) - Just the cute fantasy-realism I needed to kick me out of a depressing reading slump. I adore the way Ashley Poston uses the smallest change of reality into an endearing love story. Sounds Like Love did not disappoint as I followed Jo and Sasha through their mental connection and personal insecurities. This was an easy read that kept me interested and hopeful through to the very end!
True Colors by Kristin Hannah (4.5 stars) - Another noteworthy title by Kristin Hannah. While I do feel like about 300 of the pages in the middle could have been condensed into 75, I was helplessly turning pages to discover the next plot twist.
The Housemaid’s Secret by Freida McFadden (4 stars) - Another intriguing read from Frieda McFadden! In this sequel, Mille finds herself in another “useful” employment circumstance - but is everything as it seems? This was a solid page turner for me and while it lacked a certain “gasp-factor” I appreciated the plot twists and the “I see what you did there” moments.
The Peacock Emporium by Jojo Moyes (2 stars) - This story jumped all over the place with little connection between the pages. The main character carried some guilt and even trauma from her childhood that seemed to be an undercurrent for her entire adult life and decisions; but overall she came off as selfish and childish, refusing to take responsibility and looking to blame other people. I had hoped I would enjoy this book but I simply just didn’t.
